4 Classic St.Patrick's Day Drinks

Saint Paddy’s Day is a great time to drink. Here are 4 classic drinks for the holiday. We promise not all of them are green!

☘️ At this point, Saint Paddy’s Day has become a holiday that, for many who don’t fall into the category of celebrating Irish Pride, is all about the booze. Wear green and drink all day? Sounds pretty good to us. Granted, in order to justify said drinking excursions, it would probably be a good idea to know the general backstory of the holiday. “Erin Go Bragh!” (A phrase dating back to the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon era meaning “Ireland Forever”).

☘️ Here are a few things you should know about Saint Patrick’s Day before you take the opportunity to knock back a few beverages:

☘️ Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was taken to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He escaped, but returned to convert the vast majority of Ireland to Christianity. So yes… Saint Patrick’s day is a religious holiday in spite of the annual drinking debauchery that takes place every year. He established monasteries, churches, schools, and became a legend among the people of Ireland. You may have heard tales of him chasing all the snakes off the island, or using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity of Christianity. It was Irish emigrants, particularly those who came to the United States, who turned the holiday into a day to celebrate all things Irish (especially drinking), not just the religious bits.

☘️ Ok. Now that we’re through a quick history lesson, you have enough info to excuse you for celebrating with green beer, pinching your friends, and the legend of the leprechaun. The most important of that list being green beer. Anyway, the beverage experts @handofftech compiled a list of the most heavily sought-after Saint Paddy’s Day drinks.

☘️ Here are five beverages to perfectly compliment the bright green “Kiss Me I’m Irish” tee-shirt you wear once a year:

Car Bomb

Stop. Drop. And Drink!

The Irish Car Bomb is a fan favorite on March 17th. Be sure to drink these responsibly. They’re more powerful than they taste.

  1. Fill a shot glass with Bailey's Irish Cream

  2. Fill a pint glass half way with Guinness

  3. Drop the shot of Bailey’s into your beer, and knock it back!

  4. Seriously…. Please drink responsibly.

Green Beer

One day each year, your green drink doesn’t have to be a fancy shmancy kale smoothie.

  1. Pour a light beer of your choosing (we recommend Harp Lager)

  2. Add one to 2 drops of green food coloring

  3. Dance a jig

Irish Coffee

Never a bad idea to mix in some caffeine to keep you in the game

  1. Pour a coffee

  2. Add a shot of Jameson

  3. Optional: mix in a touch of Bailey's

  4. If you want to stay warm, check out other hot drinks.

Just Whiskey

Beverage Expert Selection: Tullamore D.E.W.

  1. Pour it.

  2. Drink it.

  3. That’s all ya need to know.

Of course, if you don’t want any of these, you can always just drink anything and utilize the ever-so-advantageous green food coloring to get in the mood. But if you want the authentic Irish drinking experience, you might want to dive into the Handoff app and order up the classics listed above.

Please be safe this holiday, and make sure to pinch the friends who aren’t wearing green.
